All Come Together For The 96

Wednesday April 15 is the 31st anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, in which 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives.

The Hillsborough Family Support Group (HFSG) had planned to hold their final memorial service at Anfield to mark the anniversary but this was unfortunately postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although fans won’t be able to attend a service at Anfield this week to show their respect, we would invite all of our supporters around the world to come together in spirit to remember the 96, their families, survivors and everyone impacted by the disaster.

Speaking about the postponement of the final memorial service, Margaret Aspinall, chair of the HFSG, said: “On behalf of the HFSG, I would like to thank everyone for their understanding in this matter. We hope to provide an update in the near future on a rescheduled date for the service.

“I would also ask that you join us in our prayers on April 15 to remember the 96 and keep the families and everyone who has been affected in your thoughts at this difficult time.”

On Wednesday April 15, players and club staff will observe a minute’s silence in memory of the 96. Club flags will also be flown at half-mast across the club throughout the day.

Gini Set For New Deal

Gini Wijnaldum set to be offered new Liverpool deal until 2024

According to reports, Liverpool are set to offer star midfielder Gini Wijnaldum a new contract that will keep the player at the club till 2024.

The 29-year-old’s contract will come to an end in 2021. The Liverpool board are in the midst of tabling a new deal to the impressive Dutchman.

It will be a just reward for a player who has been central to Jurgen Klopp’s system at Liverpool. Since joining the club in 2016, he has made 177 appearances and producing a return of 18 goals and 16 assists.

The versatile Dutchman has played in a variety of positions and has scored a number of crucial goals for the Reds. Not a single fan will forget his second-half cameo against Barcelona last season.

The news will be welcomed by fans who have come to see the Dutchman emerge as a key player for the team.

Wijnaldum, who is currently on a pay packet of £75,000-a-week, refused to give away anything whenever he was quizzed on the matter. The player chose to play coy on his future prospects as he played the cards close to his chest.

Klopp too rarely brought up the topic, which could show his confidence in the matter being resolved in our favour. Wijnaldum is set to join a number of other stars who have committed their long terms futures to the club.

Hope for the best but prepare for the worst

Liverpool has been transfer savants in the past few windows. The club is once again on top of things as they have already identified the player to replace Wijnaldum if he decides not to pen an extension.

That player is Denis Zakaria. The Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder is capable of playing in a variety of positions. His ability to do so will be a boon to Klopp, helping him explore different options.

Throwback To When Hendo Signed

Liverpool have completed the signing of Jordan Henderson from Sunderland.

The 20-year-old England international passed a medical and agreed personal terms with the club on Thursday in a deal reported to be worth £20m.

Henderson, the club's first summer signing, signed what Liverpool described as 'a long-term deal'.

"I'm over the moon, overjoyed to be here and I'm really looking forward to it," Henderson told the Liverpool website.

"Obviously it's hard to leave your local club. I'm a Sunderland lad, I've supported them all my life.

"But I'm really looking forward to the future now and obviously this is a massive opportunity for me. I'm really excited by it."

The midfielder, whose one and only cap for England came last November against France, has now joined the England Under-21 squad in Denmark ahead of the European Championship.

The Black Cats had rejected Liverpool's previous offer for the player, which was thought to be worth £16m.

Striker David Ngog, 22, could move in the opposite direction as part of the deal, but that is yet to be confirmed.

Henderson will provide competition in the Reds' midfield, which already boasts internationals Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva, Raul Meireles and Christian Poulsen.

Steven Gerrard is one of the best players in the world, you want to be playing with him and training with him to try and improve yourself as a player

Jordan Henderson

"Coming to a massive club like Liverpool, there is always going to be competition," added Henderson. "Hopefully I can keep working hard, keep improving, and get my chance on the pitch.

"(Gerrard) is one of the best players in the world, you want to be playing with him and training with him to try and improve yourself as a player. Hopefully I can learn a lot from him."

Reds director of football Damien Comolli said of the deal: "I'm very pleased because he was one of the targets we had and when you get your first target it's always a good sign because you think the others will come through as well.

"He has got all the skills technically that we needed," he added. "He's good with the ball, he's creative, he's got good passing, he's physically very good.

"That's everything we wanted in a midfielder and he's versatile as well. For manager Kenny Dalglish he will be the player we wanted."

The Sunderland-born Henderson, who had a loan spell at Coventry City early in his career, signed a five-year contract at the Stadium of Light in April 2010.

He came to prominence as Steve Bruce's Black Cats made a fine start to the season and was rewarded with an England call-up by coach Fabio Capello.

And though his form dipped as Sunderland struggled in the second half of the campaign, Henderson is still regarded as one of England's brightest young prospects.

Manchester United had been regarded as the long-time favourites to sign Henderson after he made an outstanding start to last season, but their interest cooled and manager Sir Alex Ferguson has moved on to other midfield targets.

Phil Neal Match Number 417

"Bob Paisley’s reputation for signing great players is legendary. His very first, a young right-back by the name of Phil Neal, would go on to play 650 times for the club and become Liverpool’s most decorated player.

"He would win 16 major honours for the club, including eight league titles and three European Cups.

"Neal arrived from Northampton Town in 1974 for the sum of £66,000. When weighed against his achievements, that has to be one of the greatest bargains in the history of the game.

"He contributed his fair share of goals too, scoring 69 times and proving himself deadly from 12 yards. He once scored 11 times in a single season, earning himself the nickname Zico, after the great Brazilian star.

"The secret to Phil’s success was his undeniable consistency and relentless desire. These qualities would see him play through a fractured cheekbone and a broken toe.

"However, for all his silverware, goals and appearances, there is one statistic that marks Phil Neal out as a very special Liverpool player, and that’s his record for consecutive starts for the club.

"Between October 23, 1976 and September 24, 1983, Neal played a record 417 games without interruption. That’s six seasons without missing a single game.

"However, even that doesn’t tell the whole story. His run was ended after an injury sustained in a game against MU. It would put him out for just three matches, after which he played a further 127 consecutive games."

Phil Neal is a real testimony to consistency and devotion - the qualities some players may be needing.

The run started on the 23rd of October 1976 when Liverpool drew 1-1 away against Leeds. Ray Kennedy scored the Liverpool goal. Neal’s run of games ended in September 1983 when he was substituted due to injury in the 78th minute of a 1-0 away defeat against rivals Manchester United.

417 Games were made up from.
First Division - 292
League Cup - 44
European - 44
FA Cup - 32
Charity Shield - 5

Furlough Reversal - Well Done FSG

Liverpool have reversed their decision to place some non-playing staff on temporary leave and apologised to fans.

On Saturday, the club said they were going to apply to the government's taxpayer-funded job retention scheme, sparking a fierce backlash.

But in a letter to their fans, chief executive Peter Moore said: "We believe we came to the wrong conclusion last week and are truly sorry for that."

He added that the Reds have "opted to find alternative means" to pay staff.

Liverpool had become the fifth Premier League team to furlough non-playing staff with the season suspended indefinitely because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Staff affected were to receive 80% of their salary through the scheme and the club would make up the difference, despite making a profit of more than £40m last year.

The decision was criticised by former Liverpool players Jamie Carragher and Stan Collymore.

Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Bournemouth and Norwich City had already announced they will furlough some non-playing staff.

"Despite the fact we were in a healthy position prior to this crisis, our revenues have been shut off yet our outgoings remain," said Moore.

"And like almost every sector of society, there is great uncertainty and concern over our present and future.

"Like any responsible employer concerned for its workers in the current situation, the club continues to prepare for a range of different scenarios, around when football can return to operating as it did before the pandemic.

"These scenarios range from best case to worst, and everything in between.

"It is an unavoidable truth that several of these scenarios involve a massive downturn in revenue, with correspondingly unprecedented operating losses.

"Having these vital financial resources so profoundly impacted would obviously negatively affect our ability to operate as we previously have."
